James R Mitchell

James Mitchell was a prominent resident and citizen of the town of Batavia, NY, and was one of the first members of the regiment. He began recruitment in Batavia as soon as Lincoln made the call for volunteers and was Captain of the company which was enlisted and which would become Company F.

When the regiment was formed at Albany, Colonel Donnelly gave James Mitchell the rank of Major. However, Mr. Mitchell was 48 at the time that he joined the regiment and he resigned from the regiment three months later, on September 13th 1861.

Mr. Mitchell is buried at Harvester Cemetery in Batavia, Genesee County, NY. Buried within him is his wife, Almedia.

The marker reads:

JAMES R. MITCHELL Died Nov. 23, 1885. Aged 73 Yrs. ----- ALMEDIA R. His wife Died Mar. 31, 1885. Aged 76 Yrs.

Within the cemetery there is a large mausaleum with an open clear area of grass behind. Mr. Mitchell and his wife are buried about four rows of markers after the open area of grass.
