Charles P Aiken (Akins)
Charles Akins (seen as Aiken in the roster) enlisted with Company E of the 28th NY as Private in May 1861 and was promoted to Corporal in December 1861 and Sergeant on July 4, 1862. He mustered out with the regiment on June 1863. He is buried at West Avenue Cemetery in Canandaigua, NY.
West Avenue Cemetery is not in a very good condition. It is in the middle of the City of Canandaigua and a large number of the stones appear to have been vandalized. Thankfully, the stones of the men from the 28th who are buried there have been spared any damage.
His stone reads: | ||||||||||||||
CHARLES P. AKINS Sergt Co. E. 28th NY Vol Inf Died Jul 9, 1881 Aged 51 Yrs
Mr. Akins is buried in the East 3 section. The sections are divided based on the road pattern in the cemetery and, from the main entrance, "East 3" is to the right (east) of the central track between the second and third tracks which split off at right-angles to the main track.
