At the age of 23, William Gillespie enlisted in Company H, 28th NY at Monticello, Sullivan County, NY. He served with the regiment through to 19th Mar. 1863, at which time he was dishonorably discharged; however, details of why he was discharged are currently unknown. He is not believed to have reenlisted. | ||||||||||||||
He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel, Sullivan County, NY. | ||||||||||||||

Evergreen Cemetery is mid-size and nicely kept. The Gillespie plot is located about eight rows in from the right side of the road that goes in to the cemetery. The road loops through the cemetery and the Gillespie plot is to the far right of the cemetery as one stands facing it from the road. | ||||||||||||||
