Chester Barry

Chester Barry enlisted in Company A of the 28th NY at the age of 18. He mustered in on May 22nd, 1861 and proceeded with the regiment to Washington and into Maryland. However, his service with the regiment was cut short and he was discharged for disability at Berlin, Md., on August 6th, 1861.

We do not know what disability he was discharged for, but we recovered and reenlisted with the 8th NY Cavalry. While serving with the 8th NY Cavalry, he was captured and spent four months as a Prisoner of War at Lynchburg.

Mr. Barry died on August 16th 1913 and is buried at Lynhaven cemetery in Lyndonville, Shelby, Orleans County, NY. With him is buried his wife and possibly two of his children.

The front side of his marker stone reads as follows:

CHESTER F. Nov. 30, 1845 – Aug. 16, 1913 Served in the Union Army in the Civil War From Apr. 20, 1861 to June 26, 1865

ADELAID C. His Wife May 27, 1847 – Jan. 10, 1920

With the back side reading as follows:

SENA H. May 21, 1881 – Apr 8 1902 ----- WENDALL S. Apr 28 1875 – Nov 26 1903

Within the cemetery, the family plot is located very centrally.
