Flags of the 28th New York
During the two year service of the 28th New York, four flags were issued to the regiment: Two by the state when the regiment was mustered into service and two which were made by the ladies of Batavia.
The flags which were made by the ladies of Batavia were lost at the Battle of Cedar Mountain and the National Flag was found and returned in 1882. The Battle Flag made by the ladies of Batavia is still lost.
Period photos only exist of two of the four flags: Firstly, the National Flag which was made by the ladies of Batavia, captured at Cedar Mountain and returned by the 5th Va in 1882. Secondly, The Regimental flag presented to the regiment by the State in May 1861.
Below the two period photos is a current picture of the National Colors of the regiment which was presented to the regiment in May 1861 and is housed at the Historical Society in Lockport, NY.
