A book with the diary of Washington Hicks was published suggesting that Hicks only ever had one wife, however his obituary was submitted in 1885, 11 years after the death of Mary Travis by Ruhama Travis Hicks who noted herself as the wife of, and executor of the estate of, Washington Hicks. The two wives of Mr. Hicks, Ruhama and Mary, may have been cousins.
